Sharks Sixth in PacWest Preseason, Arzberger Preseason All-PacWest

IRVINE, Calif. – The PacWest Conference men’s soccer coaches selected Hawai’i Pacific University to finish sixth in the annual PacWest Preseason Men’s Soccer Poll announced on Tuesday. The coaches also named midfielder Garrit Arzberger as Preseason All-PacWest.

The Sharks, who are coming off a 6-8-3 season, 4-7-2 in the PacWest in 2017, received 80 total points in the poll for sixth, three points ahead of Biola in seventh with 77 points and 15 behind Azusa Pacific with 95 in fifth.

Point Loma is the favorite to win the conference as the PacWest coaches gave PLNU 141 points and nine of the 12 first place votes. Concordia Irvine was second with 128 points and two first place votes, while Notre Dame de Namur was third with 118 points and one first place vote. Fresno Pacific received 103 points in fourth. After APU, HPU and Biola, Chaminade received 51 points in eighth, Dominican 47 points in ninth, Academy of Art 46 points in 10th, Holy Names 26 points in 11th and Hawai’i Hilo with 24 points in 12th.

Arzberger, a 6-0 senior midfielder from Munich, Germany/Therese von Bayern, is one of the 13 student-athletes named to the Preseason All-PacWest Conference team. An All-PacWest Conference Third Team selection in 2017, Arzberger was is the HPU’s top returning scorer, collecting five goals and 12 points last season. He placed 22 of his 42 shots on goal in 2017, leading the Sharks with a .524 shots on goal percentage.

Leading the preseason squad is Fresno Pacific midfielder Anthony Velarde as the Preseason Player of the Year. Notre Dame de Namur’s Moises Claudio is the Preseason Defender of the Year, while Point Loma’s Wiktor Lasota was selected the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.

The Sharks open the 2018 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Waipio Soccer Complex Field 5 as they host cross-town rival Chaminade in a 1:30 p.m. non-conference match.
